Paddle Queensland Awards Life Membership to Julian Norton-Smith

Paddle Queensland is proud to announce that Julian Norton-Smith has been awarded Life Membership at the 2025 Paddle Queensland Annual General Meeting, recognising more than four decades of exceptional service, leadership and contribution to paddlesports in Queensland.

Life Membership is the highest honour bestowed by Paddle Queensland and is reserved for individuals who demonstrate outstanding leadership, integrity and long-term impact on the sport. Julian’s contribution spans elite athletic achievement, world-class coaching, visionary governance and tireless volunteer service.

As an athlete, Julian represented Australia, Queensland and Tasmania at the highest levels of sprint canoeing, competing at Junior, Under 23 and Senior World Championships, World Cups and international regattas. His career highlights include multiple World Cup gold medals, national championship titles and a lasting Australian K4 1000m championship race record. Beyond flatwater, he also achieved elite success in surf lifesaving, earning multiple world and national medals across disciplines.

Following his retirement from elite competition, Julian’s influence only deepened. As a coach, he founded Paddle 2 Fitness in 2008 and has since become one of Australia’s most respected and influential paddling educators. Through innovative coaching methods, the integration of modern sports science and an unwavering commitment to inclusivity, Julian has guided athletes of all ages and abilities to state, national and international success. His digital coaching platforms, podcasts and online education now reach paddlers globally, sharing knowledge freely and raising the standard of coaching worldwide.

Julian’s volunteer and leadership service to Paddle Queensland has been equally profound. A volunteer since 2008, Board member since 2019 and President since 2020, he has played a pivotal role in strengthening governance, supporting clubs, developing new disciplines such as ocean racing, and expanding participation pathways across Queensland. His work has helped bridge surf lifesaving and paddlesports, establish clubs, develop infrastructure and ensure paddling remains inclusive, sustainable and community-driven.

Paddle Queensland President and Board representatives acknowledged that Julian’s impact is measured not only in medals and results, but in lives changed, communities strengthened and pathways created for future generations of paddlers.

“Julian Norton-Smith embodies everything Life Membership represents,” a Paddle Queensland President Justin Appi said. “His leadership, integrity, innovation and generosity have shaped paddlesports in Queensland and beyond. His legacy will be felt for decades to come.”

Paddle Queensland congratulates Julian Norton-Smith on this richly deserved honour and thanks him for his extraordinary and ongoing contribution to the paddling community.
