What is Outrigger Canoe?

The Sport
Outrigger racing is contested in sleek, lightweight canoes designed for both speed and stability in open water conditions. Paddlers use a single-bladed paddle and compete across a wide range of race formats and distances, from short-course sprints to endurance marathons and open ocean crossings.

The sport includes several different canoe classes, including:

OC1 – Single-person outrigger canoe
OC2 – Two-person outrigger canoe
OC3 & OC4 – Three and four-person canoes
OC6 – Six-person outrigger canoe and the most recognised traditional team boat in the discipline
Competition is available across men’s, women’s, and mixed divisions, with categories spanning junior paddlers through to masters athletes. Outrigger welcomes both recreational and competitive participants, offering opportunities for beginners, surf lifesavers, endurance athletes, and elite paddlers alike.

Racing & Conditions
Outrigger Canoeing takes place across a variety of waterways including flatwater courses, rivers, harbours, estuaries, and open ocean environments.

Sprint racing is typically held over distances ranging from 250 metres to 1500 metres, while long-distance events can extend beyond 20 kilometres and may include relay or changeover formats. Ocean races often feature surf, swell, and downwind conditions that test not only endurance and fitness, but also technical skill, timing, teamwork, and water awareness. Outrigger Canoeing takes place across a variety of waterways including flatwater courses, rivers, harbours, estuaries, and open ocean environments.

Success in Outrigger is built on rhythm and unity. Crews paddle in sync, relying on precision, communication, and technique as much as strength and power.

More Than a Sport
Outrigger Canoeing is recognised for its unique combination of culture, camaraderie, fitness, and ocean connection. The discipline promotes resilience, teamwork, and respect for the environment while continuing to celebrate the traditions and heritage of Pacific paddling cultures. Rich in culture, tradition, and teamwork, Outrigger Canoeing offers something for everyone, from recreational paddlers and ocean enthusiasts through to endurance athletes and elite competitors. As awareness of the sport continues to grow across Australia, so too does its passionate community, united by a shared respect for the ocean and the traditions that shaped the discipline.
