🌿 Wetlands Wander 2025 🌿
On Sunday 25 May, Sandgate Paddling Club proudly hosted the 28th annual Wetlands Wander — a much-loved tradition since 1996.

With 75 paddlers from across Southeast Queensland, the event saw a healthy mix of single and double racing kayak’s, touring kayak’s, ocean skis, SUP’s, canoes, and outriggers, take on the winding 5km loop through the stunning Boondall Wetlands, racing distances of 5, 10 or 15km.

It’s a day that always brings the club together, with members leading on-water safety alongside VMR Brisbane, and volunteers stepping up in true community spirit.

As always, the verdict was in: “Best race ever!”

To see more wrap up pics from the day visit the Sandgate Paddling Club Inc. FB page.

✨ Introducing featured QLD athlete, Julian Norton-Smith, who will represent Australia in the 2025 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing Championships in South Africa this October.

🔥 Rapid-fire Round with Julian 🔥
🌊 Club - Brisbane Paddling Club
🌊 Years paddling - 40 years
🌊 Favourite Event & Why - The Doctor back in 2017 in 30-40 knot winds and 3-4 metre swells, dropping 2-3 stories in massive conditions and completely submerging my ski and body would be my favourite event to date.
🌊 Motivation for paddling - In the past, winning. Now in my 50s I simply love the journey. Being out in the open water with the wind and waves everyday. Paddling with friends and racing with mates.
🌊 Pre-race routines/superstitions - A set breakfast, then a protein shake about 20 mins before warm up. A set 25 min warm up covering 3-4kms. Then settling into the correct position before the race starts.
🌊When Im not paddling - I love fly fishing 🎣 and taking my boy to the beach to watch him learn to surf. 🏄
🌊You can only eat one food for the rest of your life, what is it - Eggs, scrambled or poached! 🥚🥚🥚

Thanks for sharing Julian!

🚣‍♀️50th Gregory River Canoe Marathon Wrap-Up🚣‍♂️

Crystal-clear waters, red dirt landscapes, and pure outback spirit defined the 50th Gregory River Canoe Marathon – a truly unforgettable return after two years of cancellations.

Chris Barnes of Hervey Bay claimed his first long-course win in 3:28:09, just 41 seconds ahead of 37-time racer Steve Jenje. In the 17km event, 64-year-old Brisbane paddler Mark Sanderson took top honours in 1:28:15, declaring the Gregory “the best event in the country.”

With ideal river conditions flowing, the 2025 marathon was a celebration of history and endurance. Dave Ferguson, winner of the inaugural 1976 race, returned for the milestone event, highlighting the deep legacy of this remote, spring-fed challenge.

Set against the stunning Gulf Savannah backdrop, 300km northwest of Mt Isa, the marathon is unlike any other race in Australia and draws crowds back year after year.

Beyond the race, the weekend was a celebration of community. Festivities were kicked off with over 150 guests enjoying the Dinner in the River - a camp oven feast provided by local volunteers. And with 150 years of combined racing experience between them, the VanRyt family won the Canadian Challenge with 91-year-old matriarch Rita joining for the final stretch.

The North West Canoe Club thanks all paddlers, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters—especially Burke Shire Council and Mount Isa businesses—for helping make the 50th marathon a triumph of paddling, connection, and outback spirit. ✨
